CAP Study Bootcamp

Are you preparing for the CAP exam and need focused study time with your peers and domain subject matter experts (SMEs)? CAP Study Bootcamp at CAPstone Spring 2022 is just what you need and includes lots of time learning from SMEs from all six of the CAP Body of Knowledge domains with fellow test-takers. Based on the CAP Study Guide, small group cohorts spend sections of each day with a single SME, reviewing information and asking questions. Learn study tips, test-taking best practices, and experiences from a CAP designee. CAP Study Bootcamp alumni have a success rate of over 85% on the exam; while we can’t guarantee a passing score, we can guarantee Bootcamp will provide a great experience of preparation, learning, studying, and connection.

Studying for an exam can be intimidating and overwhelming, especially if you are preparing on your own. Join your fellow test-takers for an in-person experience of joint study, learning, and collaboration.

The CAP Study Bootcamp track at CAPstone provides you the opportunity to engage with subject matter experts from all six domains. Participants will be assigned to small group cohorts to maximize custom learning opportunities. Cohorts spend sections of each day with a single domain SME, allowing plenty of time to review information, ask questions, and learn from peers.

As we tackle organizational management in this 2.5 day live training, it’s all about improving your work relationships, and environment. The course objective is to enhance supervisory and leadership skills through increased knowledge and application of organizational behavior, communication, teamwork, and strategic planning abilities in the workplace. With a heavy emphasis on communication throughout all the components, we will work to develop more effective skills as individuals and teams. This is quite possibly the most practical training you will ever receive because it serves as a big dose of conflict prevention!

This Organizational Management (OM) Specialty Certificate course offers a deep dive into the following topics:
  • Organizational Behavior
  • Compelling Communication
  • Effective Teamwork Skills
  • Strategic Planning
For each learning component, we will use a variety of learning and practice techniques: interactive lectures, group discussions, videos, group challenges and even games.

Day One
1. Organizational behavior learning objectives
  • Distinguish between intrapersonal and interpersonal behavior and their impact on your professional advancement
  • Interpret the effect diversity has on an organization’s success and future growth
2. Compelling Communication learning objectives
  • Explain how personality types affect communication styles, professional interactions, and then employ professional communication strategies to meet individual needs
  • Employ professional communication to impart influence in the workplace
  • Analyze conflict resolution strategies and implement in professional situations

Day Two
1. Effective Teamwork learning objectives
  • Examine how organizations and individuals benefit when employees work in teams
  • Demonstrate how to build and maintain a high performing team and manage difficult behavior in team environments

Day Three (1/2 day)
1. Strategic Planning learning objectives
  • Describe the importance of processes and procedures in strategic planning
  • Demonstrate how to develop a strategic plan to facilitate positive organizational change

*Participants will select one of the four learning components and develop a personal or organizational project designed to be implemented post training.
In this course we will spend considerable time on how diversity is an enhancement to the workplace and how we can promote, foster, and grow diversity and its elements within that space. The workshop will take the time to discuss the dynamics of power, privilege, and hierarchy within the workplace. Key terms will be presented and discussed and case studies will be offered for analysis. Workshop participants will be expected to participate in lively and respectful dicussion.

Those participating should come prepared to take notes, report out, and read short selections. Participants will have the opportunity to work on their complex and critical thinking expertise, but also analytical abilities and how to better consider the intersectionalities of diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace.

Goals for Learning Outcomes:
  • The examination of implicit bias analysis and identity
  • Practical understanding of the importance of DEI in the workplace
  • Ability to implement or establish the vast elements of DEI into the workplace culture, but also how to integrate those elements into policies and procedures
  • Turning thought into agency and intentional actions to promote DEI internally and externally
  • A clearer understanding of the politics of identity and acceptance
  • Ways to better support and enhance diverse employee selection practices, organizational diversity, and relational identities
  • Attracting and maintaining retention in a diverse workforce
  • How handle and reduce the elements of bias
  • How to approach uncomfortable conversations
  • How to promote unity within diversity and the better navigation of transcultural spaces by the use of cultural humility
  • Deeper understanding of overlapping issues such as, but not limited to: socioeconomic status, ethnicity, and sexual orientation
  • Understanding the use of inclusive language
  • A detailed understanding of cultural diversity and transculturalism
  • How to support a more transparent and communicative workplace
  • Finding, projecting, and protecting our collective and individual voices
  • Ways to be proactive rather than retroactive and intentional rather performative with regards to DEI, a company mission, and its core values
  • Reflection, journaling, and emoting to be heard and hearing to listen will also be examined
Mic check 1...2...3! It’s no secret that public speaking skills are imperative for any professional who has the drive to thrive. Public speaking statistics show that the fear that many have impairs wages and promotion to management by 10% and 15% respectively. Furthermore, only 8% of those who have fear of public speaking seek professional help despite the documented negative impact on their career and wages.

This is your chance to take action! Together we can identify the fear that’s holding you back speaking publicly. You will learn to captivate your audiences when you speak and get support when you ask for it. You already have the expertise, now you just want to feel confident about your delivery both in-person or in virtual spaces. You will discover your core strengths and develop the traits of the world’s most captivating speakers: dynamism, comfort, and empathy. After two and a half days, you will be a fearless and powerful public speaker and presenter with opportunities to build your executive presence.

Dr. LaKeisha Thorpe has been a higher education professional for 13 years and has spent the better part of a decade researching, teaching, and presenting on diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging. Dr. Thorpe has taught college courses on cultural and racial theories, womanist and feminist theories, and pop culture and arts-based research methodologies. She is passionate about social justice, cultural humility, and a transdisciplinary approach to the navigation of transcultural spaces.

She has presented and/or facilitated groups at Cedar Crest College, Providence College, and Bryn Mawr College, Lafayette College, Moravian University and Princeton University. Dr. Thorpe serves on several boards and committees throughout northeastern Pennsylvania. She’s appeared on podcasts and television to discuss the work of and surrounding DEI. Dr. Thorpe has also been an editor, a guest lecturer, and spent 4 years as a radio show host in Philadelphia, Pa. She currently serves as the Chief Officer of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia, Pa.

Sharniece Moore, PMP, CAP, OM, ITIL, GAPM has over 15 years of experience in the realm of business administration and project management. A native of Virginia Beach, she began her career as an administrative professional to live her passion for helping others to eradicate complexities, simplify processes and . . . well . . . attain her lifelong dream of access to endless office supplies!

During her career as a senior administrative assistant at the Georgia Department of Transportation and the Georgia Technology Authority, Sharniece received accolades and awards for the support she provided to over 150 staff members and critical projects that impact the lives of Georgians across the state. In 2016, she transitioned into full time project management, applying the skills she honed as an administrative professional to oversee the delivery of major IT projects for state agencies. In addition to her work as a certified project manager, Sharniece has continued her association with multiple organizations, including IAAP and TI Communities.

Combining her affinity for administrative professionals and her entrepreneurial spirit, Sharniece founded Solutions for Excellence, LLC in 2019 to help others develop talents and skills that support living their best lives. She is a frequent presenter at national conferences, served as an IAAP Branch Director and a contributing author for the IAAP CAP Study Guide, and teaches project management courses. She and her two rescue dogs reside in metro Atlanta, where she has a closet devoted to office supplies!

Sonya holds a Masters’ in Counseling Psychology, a graduate license in counseling, and has various certifications in project management, business analysis, human resources, training development, and administrative/office management.   She is also a proud alum of the Americorp*VISTA program and an emerging Toastmaster.But, most importantly, she attended the first CAPstone in Feb of 2018 – and the rest they say is history!  #PowerOfTheCAP!

Amanda earned her undergraduate degree in communication from Freed-Hardeman University in 1991 and a master’s degree in communication from Mississippi College in 1993.
